Castillo de Peñafiel

The castle of Peñafiel began to rise in the tenth century, although its current appearance is the product of important interventions that took place during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This medieval fortress was declared a National Monument in 1917 and today it has become an emblem for the enotourism of the Ribera del Duero.


Peñafiel together with his castle constituted a fundamental point in the defensive line of the Duero, both for Christians and Muslims back in the 9th and 10th centuries. From the hill, the castle dominated the valleys of the Duero, Duratón and Botijas rivers, and protected to the population.

Torre del Reloj

It is the only thing left of the Romanesque church of San Esteban, founded in 1086 to commemorate the Castilian victory over Almoravid Ali. The tower is Gothic, from the 13th century and the clock was placed in it in the 19th century. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1981.

Iglesia de Santa Clara

Building of octagonal central plant built in 1698 is, nowadays, Well of Cultural Interest. It is the church of what is currently the Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras, although it maintains its liturgical functionality.

The convent was founded in 1607, by the second wife of D. Pedro Téllez Girón, Mrs. Isabel de la Cueva. The Church, work of the last decade of the seventeenth century has an octagonal central plan with elliptical dome, covered with colorful plasterwork of the early eighteenth century. A triumphal arch of half a point, gives access to the main chapel, of small dimensions, covered with lunettes decoration. At the feet is the high choir. Inside, numerous altarpieces decorate the main altar and perimeter walls.

Convento de San Pablo

In the old Alcázar of Alfonso X El Sabio, the Infante Don Juan Manuel built the current Gothic-Mudejar convent in 1324 where he was buried. This emblematic monument of Peñafiella was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931 and can now be visited in a free or guided way.
The exterior of this Property of Cultural Interest stands out for the exuberance of the arches made of brick, in Mudejar Gothic style, which contrast radically with the rich decoration of the funeral chapel of the Manuel, built two centuries later in Plateresque style.

Palace of Guzmán and Santoyo

In 1991 it was declared a "Site of Cultural Interest", with a Monument category.

Its origin is found in the old manor houses of the Guzmán and Santoyo and in those of the Beltrán that occupy bordering positions.

The works had to begin at the beginning of the decade of the 40s.

Shortly after, two renowned stonemasons in Trasmiera merindad, Francisco de la Fonfrida and Pedro de la Torre, are responsible for erecting, in front of the building that D. Cristóbal had made, a body topped with two towers, also lengthening the vaulted basement of the same.

San Juan Bautista Church

In 1991 it was declared "Asset of Cultural Interest" with category of Monument.

The church stands in the heart of the village as an articulating element of the different neighborhoods.

In 1577 it began to fulfill the parochial functions in spite of which the Church was not finished until half-full of Century XVII (1650), and in 1755 in its totality.

The project had been started by the Sebastián Arandino maestro, whom he replaced in 1558, his son-in-law Juan Vélez, master stonemason of the Diocese of Sigüenza.

San Facundo and San Primitivo Church

The parish of Quintanamanvirgo is under the patronage of Saints Facundo and Primitivo, two saints of exclusive devotion to the order of the Benedictine monks. This Order appears settled in the area from the year 937, at which time the repoblador Diego Ródaniz donates to the monks of the monastery of Arlanza the Monastery of San Andrés de Boada to pray for him and his wife. The dynamics of the monastery would be present in Quintanamanvirgo not only religiously, but also materially by donations and purchases.

It is a church that has undergone several extensions and demolitions, which has remained spacious but without a defined building style, except for its slender belfry.

Nuestra Señora de la Antigua Church

Although it is the hermitage of San Andrés, located on the hill that dominates the village, which has been identified with the old monastery emerged in the tenth century, the fact is that it is the parish church that most clearly shows the heritage of the former priory Benedictine, as they still proclaim the blazons of Arlanza that look the adjoining houses, once belonging to the monks

Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church

The parish was dedicated, at first, to Our Sra. La Antigua; however, later (sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) it came to be called La Asunción de Ntra. Sra.

In the nineteenth century, this church belonged to the Bishopric of Osma despite being in the province of Burgos. Until 1956, when they became dependent on the current Diocese of their province.

The parish of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, Presents an almost baroque interior for the most part. The temple has a single nave divided into four sections, with vaults of geometric decoration and central finials. At the back is the choir and on the side a small chapel that holds the altarpiece of Santo Cristo opens.

Santa Engracia Church

It is a catholic church dedicated to Santa Engrancia, declared BIC in 2009 in the category of Monument. It dates from the 16th century, built in stone of Gothic style.

This building keeps a magnificent main altarpiece inside. Its exterior shows a slender tower as well as a small arch attached to a house that serves as an entrance to the external area of the temple, its current image being the result of the numerous reforms suffered in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. It consists of a single nave of three sections covered with baroque plasterwork in 1772.
