“Riberation” among birds - The natural landscape of the loberas

“Riberation” among birds

THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE OF THE LOBERAS

On the outskirts of the town of Caleruega (Burgos) is this beautiful natural landscape, where the Loberas can be found.

The name is given to circular constructions in a vernacular architectural style found in the area. Shepherds used to keep their flocks in them at night to protect them from wolf attacks. One of these curious buildings has now been renovated as an ecomuseum explaining the work of shepherds and the fauna and flora of the surrounding area.

Near the ecomuseum you can find a watchtower where you will be astonished at the wonderful views. Thousand-year-old pine and holm oak woods dominate the landscape, while you can enjoy watching the birds that nest in the area or frequent it on the migration routes, such as the nightingale, the cuckoo, the peregrine falcon, the golden eagle, the griffon vulture and the Egyptian vulture.

GURUGÚ PEAK AT BOCOS DE DUERO

This is a mountain standing 867 metres high beside the Valladolid village of Bocos de Duero. Visitors find the effort required to reach the peak, with a limestone top shaped like the prow of a ship, is well worthwhile. At the summit you can see impressive views of the Cuco and Ribera del Duero valleys. You can also see archaeological remains of what was probably a lookout building, which is quite likely considering the proximity of Curiel de Duero and Peñafiel castles on the natural boundary formed by the Duero in the wars between Moors and Christians.

Its vertical walls provide places for hobbies to breed and a nesting site for a fine colony of griffon vultures, so birdwatchers can often be seen near the mountain.

HOCES DEL RÍO RIAZA NATURAL PARK

Hoces del Río Riaza is in the north-east of Segovia province, very near the provinces of Burgos and Soria. The River Riaza runs through this natural area of great value for its landscape and fauna.

The presence of limestone cliffs with many ledges and holes of all sizes allows a rich community of cliff-dwelling birds to nest. Meanwhile, every year, the Linares del Aroyo reservoir becomes the main area in the province for water birds to spend the winter.

In the area of Hoces del Río Riaza, you can visit a series of small villages that still preserve their rural heritage and purest traditions. At Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela is the Hoces del Río Riaza Natural Park Centre, which is the reception centre for visitors to the park. In this area you can also enjoy high-quality cuisine, such as roast suckling lamb and Ribera del Duero red wines.
