Adored by the Sanestebeños, this church houses in its interior the venerated Virgen del Rivero, patron saint of the town, in whose honor the patron saint festivities are celebrated and the day of Concord, on May 1, in which 30 towns come to the town with its banners and offering them to the Virgin.
It is a Romanesque porticoed church of the twelfth century, which follows the model of its neighbor San Miguel, and which stands on top of a hill majestically presiding over the town of San Esteban de Gormaz.
It is of a single ship, with semicircular apse towards east and porticoed gallery to the south. Later additions are the sacristy, the chapel of San Lorenzo, the camerín de la Virgen and the espadaña. Interestingly, the construction of the sacristy has allowed intact the decorative elements of the northern part of the apse can be seen (accessed from inside the temple) the characteristic checkered, the decoration of the capitals and even stonemasons with great detail .
The porticoed gallery, southern, has eleven capitals, 8 to the south and 3 to the east. It preserves the original 5 arches on the southern front and the two on the eastern side. As in the primitive church of San Miguel, the decoration predominates with characters dressed in the Islamic style, the animal theme (raptors with their wings spread, sometimes devouring hares, snakes and canids, the lion devouring its prey) and the plant decorations.
Inside the portico, to the left of the access door to the nave, there is a 16th century arcosolium integrated into the temple wall, with a carpanel arch and the shields of Don Diego II López Pacheco and Doña Luisa de Centurión and Bobadilla , the first with barracks of the Pacheco and Enríquez and the second with the signs of the Cabrera, Mendoza, Bobadilla and Noroña.
