The so-called "Old Bridge Duero" of Peñafiel has clear medieval elements, but the width of its arches and the magnitude of the work could go back to a Roman background.
The road from Esguevillas to Peñafiel crossed the Douro River by this old bridge that is in deplorable conditions, both in regard to the width of the bridge and the ruinous and dangerous state of its supports and vaults, although, against everything foreseeable , the work continues in corroborating the assertion of the "tendency of the works not to fall". As we have already mentioned in point 4, a "New Duero Bridge" was built to alleviate the need to communicate both sides of the river during the Spanish Civil War.
Its ruinous state threatens to lose forever one of the oldest monuments of Peñafiel and the witness of a large part of the history of the town. Its recovery must become an urgent imperative for our authorities.
Regarding the path we are traveling along the path of the Duero, this section changes the margin by fording the Douro River through this "Old Duero Bridge", crossing the VA-101 road through a lower pass under the "New Duero Bridge" and arriving (for the third wooden walkway that was built in 2013 for the GR 14 Trail) to the confluence of the Duero and Duratón rivers, which join their waters before reaching Peñafiel.
