“Riberation” among birds
GURUGÚ PEAK AT BOCOS DE DUERO
This is a mountain standing 867 metres high beside the Valladolid village of Bocos de Duero. Visitors find the effort required to reach the peak, with a limestone top shaped like the prow of a ship, is well worthwhile. At the summit you can see impressive views of the Cuco and Ribera del Duero valleys. You can also see archaeological remains of what was probably a lookout building, which is quite likely considering the proximity of Curiel de Duero and Peñafiel castles on the natural boundary formed by the Duero in the wars between Moors and Christians.
Its vertical walls provide places for hobbies to breed and a nesting site for a fine colony of griffon vultures, so birdwatchers can often be seen near the mountain.
