Arqueologist for a day

On this archaeological route, you will discover how the ancient inhabitants of our territory lived: a journey through time along the Ribera del Duero from the Iron Age to the splendor of the Middle Ages.

  • Archaeological Park of Rauda Vaccea (Roa de Duero)
  • Archaeological Classroom of Pintia (Peñafiel)
  • Padilla de Duero and Pesquera de Duero archaeological site (Padilla and Pesquera de Duero)
  • Roman Site of Ciella (Valdeande)
  • Archaeological Sites of La Pudia and San Mamés (Caleruega)
  • Archaeological Site of the Hermitage of Santa Cruz (Valdezate)

The Rauda Vaccea Archaeological Park in Roa de Duero is a large interpretation and exhibition center located at the exact site of the archaeological site, a space that spans from hunter-gatherer societies to the life of the first communities that developed writing, urbanism, and wine culture.

The museographic space of the Archaeological Classroom of Pintia-Vaccean Village, located in Peñafiel, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the development of Vaccean culture in the central area of the Duero Basin during the 4th to 1st centuries BC. The archaeological site was declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 1993.

We continue to go back in time to the Iron Age at the Archaeological Zone of Padilla de Duero and Pesquera de Duero, highlighting the exceptional and unique character of the Celtiberian and Roman necropolises, both of incineration, located in Las Ruedas.

In the archaeological classroom that recreates the Roman life of Ciella in Valdeande, it is possible to observe on the surface a multitude of archaeological materials from the Roman period, such as "Sigillata" pottery, tegulae, etc. The Roman site suggests that it was an important Roman settlement, surely related to the nearby town of Clunia.

And there's more!

La Pudia, in Caleruega, displays the remains of a small early medieval village that developed between the 9th and 10th centuries, composed of a church and three houses, where a small peasant community engaged in agriculture, livestock, and textile activities.

The archaeological site of San Mamés, also located in Caleruega, allows us to recreate a property of Santo Domingo de Silos in the 13th century. The excavation carried out in 2013 allowed a deep understanding of the building remains of a hermitage as well as several silos for cereal storage and an anthropomorphic tomb.

In Valdezate, you can find pre-Roman remains and early medieval necropolises. The excavations carried out in the Church of Santa Cruz have confirmed that the site was a place of worship at least from the 2nd to the 15th centuries. During the Roman period, there was a semi-rock occupation and pre-Christian economic and cultural activity. From the 5th century onwards, there was a necropolis and a Christian worship center that continued until at least the 11th century.
