Located on the banks of the river Duero, and located practically on the top of the moor overlooking the Duratón, its municipal district borders with the province of Segovia.
The Church of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of the town, dates from the 12th century. It has a Romanesque-Gothic style and is made of stone with a slender tower, its naves are covered by arches and plasterworks from the 18th century. The main altarpiece, a baroque work from the 17th century, is a real marvel to see.
But more than the church, what will surprise us is the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Elm. Located in a wonderful place, on a hillside hidden among abundant vegetation, it is a stone building with a belfry. To get to it, you have to take the road that goes straight ahead next to the cemetery.
In addition to these two religious temples, this town has an excellent natural viewpoint over the valley of Duratón and a neighborhood of wineries in the lower part of the town and from which you can enjoy the altitudes of the moors.
Canalejas de Peñafiel celebrates its first party in the time of Corpus Christi, with religious acts and festivals. Also of a religious character, is the pilgrimage with the Virgin from the church to the hermitage, the first weekend of July, on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of the Elm. The last celebration of the year is in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption, on September 8, in which the dances, the various games and a large chocolate bar animate the whole town and visitors.
