In the old Alcázar of Alfonso X El Sabio, the Infante Don Juan Manuel built the current Gothic-Mudejar convent in 1324 where he was buried. This emblematic monument of Peñafiella was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931 and can now be visited in a free or guided way.
The exterior of this Property of Cultural Interest stands out for the exuberance of the arches made of brick, in Mudejar Gothic style, which contrast radically with the rich decoration of the funeral chapel of the Manuel, built two centuries later in Plateresque style.
The chapel presents as a central motif a Gothic tracery window framed by two pilasters and an arch. Two shields of the tutelary family of the chapel flank the window, one of them on a semicircular tower, that corresponds in the interior with a spiral staircase without central support. This staircase serves as access to a terrace.
The funerary chapel of Don Juan Manuel de Villena, plateresque style with Gothic reminiscences, is an outstanding piece of the Spanish Renaissance. Built in very white limestone, carved meticulously and kept in very good condition, it is one of the attractions of Peñafiel for lovers of cultural tourism.
