The Plaza del Coso of Peñafiel, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1999, is a public space created in the Middle Ages to host bullfighting celebrations and continues to have that function today.
The site consists of 48 buildings of two and three floors built in adobe, stone and wood, some materials that make up a rectangular space with two entrances, one in the north and one in the west. In the buildings of the Plaza del Coso there is an abundance of wooden balconies decorated with motifs such as leaves, flowers or fruits. These balconies become during the celebration of the Feast of Nuestra Señora and San Roque in boxes from which the owners of the right of view can see the bullfighting festivities.
Created for the celebration of bullfighting shows, it is used for other reasons throughout the year, such as the act of the Bajada del Ángel on Resurrection Sunday, a festival declared of National Tourist Interest.
The Plaza del Coso is a tourist attraction of first order in Peñafiel, but it is even more from August 14 to 18, dates in which the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora and San Roque, declared of Regional Tourist Interest, are celebrated. On the occasion of the festivities a ring is installed inside the square that allows the release of cattle in the style of the village, that is: with a bull inside the ring and another outside, a peculiarity that has been given to the parties of Peñafiel, a fame that transcends national borders.
In addition, Plaza del Coso has another peculiarity: it retains customary law, that is, based on the custom of 'right of views'. This servitude allows the owners of the balcony to contemplate the bullfighting celebrations from the balconies of the Plaza del Coso whether or not they are owners of the house.
