Large House Palace of The Serrano

04/10/2019 - 15:26

It was built by Don Juan Antonio Serrano Mañero, one of the most interesting characters of Sotillo de la Ribera. Very soon he oriented his life towards the ecclesiastical career, in which he obtained important positions: canon, penitentiary, Rector of the University of Santiago.Closely linked to the circles of power, he carries out an important artistic program in Sotillo and introduced neoclassicism in this municipality: he paid for the work of the General Altarpiece of the Church, promoted the patronage of the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and built a new manor house for the family. He also financed the reconstruction of the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Prados, with a neoclassical facade.

Apothecary House

04/10/2019 - 13:50

Large house of the late seventeenth century, with wooden gate framed with a powerful padding that gives way to a large hall. It has excavated under the house a lagar and in the attic there was a dovecote as is common in the region.

This house was ordered to be built by an apothecary, so from that derives its name.

This beautiful temple, of good quality and solidity, concentrates the maximum artistic wealth on its cover. Remarkable retative richness, with exuberant baroque examples and good neoclassical samples such as the main altarpiece. Splendid organ of the 2nd half of the XVII and unique Via Crucis stone carved by the local sculptor Amancio Calvo.

Town Hall of Sotillo de la Ribera

04/10/2019 - 13:31

Neoclassical building, with sober and elegant facade of well carved seating. It was built in 1781 "Rege Carolo regnante". Its plant adapts to the plot of the previous Consistorial House. It was paid for with the income of "the wine system" and the butcher's shop.

Royal shield on the facade, composed of two castles and two lions, and at its feet two holm oaks that appear to be the holm oaks of "The Slippers" since according to legend: a girl got lost in the mountain, they looked for her and the only thing that appeared were the slippers next to the enci because it had been eaten by wolves.

In some 19th-century seals they have a holm oak and a wolf leaning on it.

Church of Santa María La Mayor

03/10/2019 - 14:13

It is the most representative element of the town of Peñalba de San Esteban.

Its factory, of plastered ashlar, is from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. It is a single nave and flat headboard temple to which on its north side has been attached a sacristy and on its south side a funeral chapel where the heraldry of D. Juan Sebastián and Ana Otañez (1621) is located. At the foot of the temple rises a bell tower.

However, the most characteristic of this temple is its pork gallery. Located to the south, it is conetánea of the temple and is an example of the inertia experienced by this architectural typology of the Sorian Romanesque (and originated in the Church of San Miguel de San Esteban de Gormaz), which lasted until Renaissance times.

It is not, therefore, a Romanesque portique gallery, as we had always thought, but Renaissance, although one of the best of its style.
